Our Story
In 1972 my grandfather, William Reader, established a new mixed farming venture on the 81 acres of land I am currently using. For 30 years he was a very successful farmer employing people from the surrounding communities. He produced high quantities of root crop and sold it all locally. After my grandfather retired so did all of the farming activities. His son Boyd Reader, my father, would grow only what our family consumed annually. With no farming activities happening on the land, all of the fields grew over with forage and grew in 30 feet on the round with trees.
I have always had a passion for the land and I am proud of the vegetables it produces. In 2008 I turned over my first acre of ground and planted a variety of root crop. It was a very bad year and nothing grew to maturity. Through learning some lessons from this year I was able to produce some crop in 2009. Though it was not enough to go to market with and again most of it was not fully grown by the time the winter frost came.
By 2010 it was clear that in order to grow crop to maturity in Newfoundland I could not direct seed all vegetables. This is the year my husband, David started to gain interest in my endeavors. Together we built a greenhouse measuring 8 by 16. This year we were successful in everything we produced and made our first sales in the fall of 2010. Since that year we have been expanding and growing our farming operation. All of it funded by us from working off the farm jobs. Further expansion is required in order for our farming venture to be self sufficient, we have lots of plans for the future of Three Mile Ridge.
